This is my personal V&R map. The majority of the platforms I utilize fall on the visitor side. This means I do not create a lot of content, however I use it as a tool to communicate with my colleagues, employers, and professors. I do enjoy creating content in the form of sharing photos on Instagram and Facebook. I also write a blog for the UVic mental health website, which is a great creative outlet that aligns with my interests and academics.
What platforms are being used by students?
I have observed that many students use similar platforms, however the platforms are mapped uniquely depending on students’ personal experience. The main platforms are E-mail, You-Tube, Google, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Linkedin, and WhatsApp. These platforms enable students to build their digital identities and personal learning networks.
I think that certain platforms such as Facebook, Linkedin, and personal blogs are able to contribute to expand professional networks. Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook tend to be used in a personal and recreational manner. There is duality in the classification of several networks, and it depends on the context behind the usage. Facebook can be classified as a personal or professional platform depending on whether or not someone uses FB to develop clientele and advertise services, or share thoughts and photos with friends.
What may a student use to expand PLN?
A student may use any platform that is intended for connection, collaboration, and contribution for PLN expansion. There should be an emphasis on creativity and expressiveness, and the platform should be relatively simple to use. Networks that allow users to create accounts and display highlights are Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Platforms such as Linkedin, E-mail, and MS teams are useful for professional collaboration and expansion.

Hi Soleil,
I agree that Facebook, Linkedin, and personal blogs can be more meaningful and beneficial in a professional light whereas apps such as Instagram and TikTok are mainly used for entertainment and personal use. Not to say that Instagram and TikTok can’t support professional networks because like you said, it just depends on the context behind the usage. It is interesting to think about the networks we build according to the platform we are using!

Hi Soliel,
I agree that some applications tend to be utilized for either creative, personal, or professional use and it’s interesting to see how some people choose to use certain platforms. I personally keep different applications either one or the other but keep in mind that my personal stuff can be seen and used to reflect on how I am professionally!
I also love your V&R map and that you chose to use a different application to make it! It looks great.
